Dr. Oz and Silver Lotus!
Recently, on national television, the prominent cardiologist, surgeon and health educator, Dr. Oz (who is himself a yogi), suggested that everyone start her or his day by doing tai chi, and then later to do at least 7 minutes of yoga stretches! How's about that? We at Silver Lotus and Quakertown Integrative Health Care are leading edge practitioners -- ahead of the learning curve, so to speak.....
In addition, he said that his wife, who is a Reiki master, gives him Reiki treatments when he is in pain or stressed. He gave an explanation of what Reiki is and had a Reiki Master perform a demonstration on an audience member. He went on to recommend that members of his audience try Reiki for general health.
To say that I was delighted by these assertions is an understatement. As our health care crisis continues, health maintenance becomes increasingly more important. And, for some of us, simply the natural process of aging presents health challenges. Practices such as Reiki, yoga, qigong, tai chi and acupuncture have been shown to improve almost every health condition that we know about. Many of us have known about the values of such practices for some time; but to see and hear a prominent physician, cardiologist and surgeon clearly promote these is hopefully a sign of the times.
So, I want to remind everyone that there are Reiki Masters and practitioners right here at Silver Lotus. Currently, I offer Reiki sessions, as does Cyndee Trower who is our Yoga Teacher Training program administer.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese healing art. Like tai chi, yoga, qigong and acupuncture, Reiki addresses universal life force. In Chinese medical tradition, this life force is referred to as "qi" or "chi" (pronounced chee). In the yoga traditions of India, the same concept is referred to as "prana" (pronounced prawnah). While in Japanese traditions, it is referred to as "ki" (pronounced key). This energy is that which animates all life. Every living being has energy. According to the Eastern philosophies, health is based on the amount of energy a being has flowing through it at any given time and the ease with which that energy or life force flows through the body. Based on this fundamental idea, all of these practices share a common thread which is to promote increased energy and better flow of energy.
Reiki was developed in the 1920's by a Japanese man named Mikao Usui. It is a "hands on" healing modality that is incredibly easy to learn and to share with others. Part of the learning for the practitioner involves what is referred to as an "energy clearing." The Reiki "master" has been trained to remove blocks in the student's energy field in order for that student to become a clear, effective conduit of 'ki" or life force. Then when the student becomes a practitioner, his or her body can be a conductor of energy for the client. It is the client's body that draws the universal energy through the practitioner's body. The practitioner doesn't "give" energy, but merely helps the client maximize his or her availability to the energy field that surrounds us.
What is a Reiki session like?
In a typical Reiki session, a client either sits or lies down on a massage table fully clothed. After a short discussion, the practitioner places her or his hands at different points on the body. Energy flows! Sometimes a client will experience warmth, tingling or deep relaxation. Sometimes there is pain relief. Many people fall asleep to awaken refreshed and energized. Sometimes, especially if an individual is suffering from a great deal of stress or illness, that person may be very tired and need to continue to rest after the session. The deep relaxation that most people experience turns on the body's natural healing response and turns off the body's stress response. This is the primary physical benefit of Reiki.
Many people also feel that there is a spiritual component to Reiki. As with all spiritual practices, this is highly individualized experience. Silver Lotus is primarily concerned with health, mental health and wellness. Each individual draws his or her own opinions regarding "spirituality".

This year Silver Lotus will be offering a Reiki I practitioner training. This training is open to the general public. No prior experience is needed. Please watch for new training dates!
I would personally love to promote awareness of Reiki by offering a reduced fee of $45.00 for a 45 minute introductory session. Please feel free to call or email me. I look forward to sharing Reiki with you!
