A Welcome from Janet

Looking back with gratitude and forward with purpose.

Greetings, Everyone,

As Silver Lotus begins its next chapter, I find myself thinking about the people, experiences, and friendships that have brought us to this point.

More than ten years ago, a friend and I wandered into one of Susan Hamadock’s classes, not really knowing what Tai Chi was or what to expect. From that very first class, I felt I had found something special—a place where I belonged.

It would take many years of practice before I began to appreciate the depth of this beautiful art, and I am still learning. Perhaps that is one of the things I love most about Tai Chi and Qigong: there is always another layer to discover, another opportunity to grow, and something new to learn about ourselves along the way.

Susan has been my teacher, mentor, and friend throughout my journey. As she steps back from the day-to-day responsibilities of the Institute, I am deeply grateful for the trust she has placed in me to help carry Silver Lotus forward. She remains an important part of our community, and her influence will always be woven into who we are.

I am equally grateful for the many teachers—past and present—who have helped shape Silver Lotus. Some continue to teach regularly, while others now share their knowledge through mentoring, encouragement, friendship, and support. Each has contributed something unique to the Institute and to the students whose lives they have touched.

As I take on this new role, I don't expect Silver Lotus to stand still. I hope we continue to learn, explore, and grow while honoring the foundation that has been built over so many years.

Most of all, I want Silver Lotus to remain what it was for me when I first walked into Susan's class: a place where someone can walk through the door not quite knowing what they are looking for and discover that they have found a place to belong.

Whether you have been part of Silver Lotus for many years or are just discovering us, I am glad you are here. I look forward to seeing where this next part of the journey takes us.

Warmly,
Janet DeFeo
Institute Coordinator
